Process Club

Community-engaged collaborations that begin with an invitation

Process Club is a collaboration between artists Lee Cookson and Laurel Green to create community-engaged projects that begin with an invitation. Their work is iterative in nature, and undergoes an ongoing period of development, tasking participants with an active role in collective sense-making and storytelling. Process Club projects utilize a dramaturgy of everyday adventure, co-owned and shaped by those who take part; they are participatory and often include the use of creative writing, play, photography, and the making of art objects. Expect rigorous whimsy, analog interventions, and empathetic encouragement towards creative risk-taking.

The town of Canmore is bordered by two renowned mountain destinations. It's a designated wildlife corridor, a former coal mining town, site for the 1988 Olympic Nordic ski events, and, today, a place where the average house selling price sits at $1.3 million. This issue searches for the heart of what makes Canmore a home to some, and the second-home to many tourists, retirees, and weekenders, as the town leans into a new a new identity as a high-end bedroom and getaway community.

Taken over four years, the photographs in this issue explore the contentious topic of parking in Banff, Alberta. As the only Canadian municipality located inside a National Park, Banff has a population of approximately 8,000 locals and 8.3 million vehicles travelling through town each year. By elevating the rarified parking spot to a wildlife encounter, we pose the question: what are we driving here to see?

Evidence of a Human Occurrence

The Bureau of Human Occurrences tasks participating Agents from across the country and beyond to gather photographic evidence of human occurrence in their regions, using the disposable camera and list of prompts provided. Agents send back what they uncover, and the Bureau creates a Case File that takes the viewer somewhere new: into the forest, through the City, inside the house, and onto the playground. Photographs are completely individual, yet when assembled into a collection and put into dialogue with each other, they become part of something larger.
