Remixed by Trophy

A technology-enabled deep listening experience that explores how we instigate change.

Change is inevitable. But how we move through it, and how we move others, is something we can learn, share, and act on together. Remixed is a deep listening experience about our collective capacity to instigate change.

Remixed began as a question that emerged from Trophy, an award-winning, internationally touring performance installation launched in 2016. Bringing communities together to share stories of formative experience, Trophy revealed something unexpected: people could speak vividly about change, the shifts in their lives and how they responded, but struggled to locate it. They could describe moments before and after, but the change incident itself, what triggered it and how it happened, remained elusive.

That gap became our jumping-off point for an investigation. Could stories and interviews help to pinpoint the locus of change? Could the conditions that make transformation possible be identified, challenged, and engineered through a creative experience, one designed not just to prompt reflection, but to provoke action? Developed over five years, Remixed is the result, part artistic event and part research platform, built to surround each participant with the conditions they might need to move through or make a change themselves.

Remixed had its first showing in 2019 and has since toured across Canada and internationally as both a remote and in-person experience, developed in collaboration with a growing network of collaborators, community partners, and storytellers.

The Experience

Enter a technologically-augmented garden environment in transformation. Oversized kinetic flowers grow, bloom, and return to seed. Projection refracts off silver clouds, filling the room with organic textures that trace the floor between participants. A durational sound design wraps the entire space, weaving in and out of what you hear through your headphones. The installation shifts and responds around you as the experience unfolds. Remixed operates on a durational model, so you can arrive and linger at your own pace. The installation is modular and scalable, and can be tailored to most spaces from performance halls to galleries.

On your phone, a series of playful questions reveals your relationship to change. A purpose-built algorithm uses your responses to craft a personalized digital experience, a unique audio playlist and a visualization of the plant life cycle that guides you through the piece. Your playlist weaves together true stories of change, ambient audio, curated music, and narrative prompts. Each story connects you to a real person sharing an experience from their own life, evoking a sense of place, presence, and possibility. There are 210,600 possible variations. Your journey is uniquely yours.

Together, the installation and the app consider technology and nature as a singular ecosystem, one designed not just for reflection, but to surround you with the conditions you might need to make a change yourself.
